A party at Casa Nana

We’re only week three in the demolition stage of our Casa Nana project, but we were surprised to find it was no problem hosting a party for all our friends, despite the rubble and dust. Paul staged some furniture and placed our wall-sized artwork on the walls, and some giant Buddha heads were strategically placed. Then we set up a hot and cold buffet in the middle of the living room. Man, how people flocked to the hot and cold buffet. Looking around, you’d be tempted to think the house was complete!

We had almost forgotten that we had the architects dig a canal all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, which fed the small water feature in our living room. It was marvelous seeing our discreet trench run past our property line and disappear over the horizon. I congratulated myself: How utterly elegant of us to “bring the outside in” so tastefully.

I was surprised that doors and windows were already installed. It seemed a little early, to me. But throughout the evening, I kept noticing a wall over there was finished, a ceiling over there was completed. Amazing progress for three weeks. This is going to cake! All hail our architects!

Then, I realized the ceiling fan in the kitchen was grazing my head ever-so-slightly. The fan was custom designed, sized to fit the ceiling exactly. I guess I should have given the architects my measurements. How could they know I was 5-foot-10. The kitchen floor would have to be lowered, and considerable expense. A stupid miscalculation.

I was also a little alarmed to find a chill had set in. Paul warned me that he wanted to have a fireplace installed somewhere, but I resisted. Now, there are ice crystals underfoot and the trees have frost. I’ve been researching Mérida up and down for years and don’t remember any instances of frost. How could I be so wrong.

Party time!

Party time!

And then I woke up, dream over.  A more obvious fantasy-turned-nightmare couldn’t exist. You don’t need Dr. B to figure this one out. It’s going to be a real humdinger of a year ahead.

Is it true? Another American slain at a downtown gay sex club, THE BLUE BANANA? When will the war against sexual freedom end?

Bravo and congratulations! Generally, Yucatan has this uncanny fantasy/nightmare dynamic. All thrilling and worthwhile, IMO.

  3. I got a kick out of the whole idea of having to lower the kitchen floor. Having a brother and nephew who are both 6’8″ and my being 6′ puts “high ceilings” on the top of my wish list!

Nightmares always have a bright side. I think your wonderful soiree means that Casa Nana will be finished well before originally planned.

When you have time, shoot me an email about getting together in January. I’m arriving on the 11th.

  4. You had me too! Gee – you should be a writer ;-)

  5. HaHa!! You got me…I was giving you SO much credit for having a party in that situation! I was thinking…”Wish I could be like that!”….and then you woke up!! FUNNY!!!

  6. You must have eaten a BIG meal just before you went to bed! And yes it will be a humdinger of a year. When we were remodeling our house a few years ago I too had a crazy dream… I had told Jorge that I wished we were on a hill so that we’d have some kind of view. When I got to the work site the next day, the crew had put “sticks” (the ones they use to support structure while the concrete is drying) underneath the whole house and it was tilted about 2 meters off the ground. “We figure if we take it up another few meters, you have your view,” the proud foreman said. Dirt had slid into the pool and there was a crowd gathered across the street giving “helpful suggestions!” Yes building IS stressful but you’ll be happy in the end…
